Description

A collection of documents about and from the Forced Population Displacements and the Making of the Modern World BIARI conference. It consists of printed participant profiles, typed and handwritten notes, typed speeches and detailed schedules. These resources are related to local, national and international instances of forced displacement. Through the notes and schedules included from the conference, this item shows discussions of the displacement of Providence community members caused by Brown. Acknowledgment of this sort is generally lacking from the official institutional archives of the university. This demonstrates how the Pembroke Archive makes space for conversations the university has traditionally avoided and highlights community voices previously ignored. In this instance the Pembroke Archive illustrates a medium between the community and institutional archive, where in, the modern university is able to look back on its history with a more critical lenses and make archival space for those forced out by it.
